Chris Earnest and Amanda Best at the Mining Hall of Fame ceremony

Every year in early December, members of the mining industry and mining education assemble to honor important men and women in mining, past and present. After an online ceremony last year, in 2021 the 39th American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony & Fundraiser took place in person again in Tucson. As has become tradition, the ceremony took place just before the annual SME Arizona conference. Around 600 attendees came together to celebrate the 2021 inductee, four significant contributors to the industry and profession of mining’s past, and three medal of merit recipients. An industry partner was also honored, and the Special Citation went to the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, which celebrated its 150-year anniversary in 2021.

During the ceremony, Education Outreach Coordinator Chris Earnest reviewed the program’s activities during the transitional year that just ended. The gala dinner is also a fundraiser for Outreach activities, and a successful one at that. All in all, it was the best year ever for sponsorship, with over $120k raised.
